Useful information for tourists about Marseille in France - geographical location, tourist infrastructure, map, architectural features and attractions.

Marseille is the city and largest port of France, located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, near the mouth of the Rhone River. The city was founded in the 7th century BC. e. Phocians, Greeks from Asia Minor, and then called "Massilia." In 49 BC the city was captured by the Romans. Thanks to trade with eastern countries and the Crusades, the city very quickly turned into one of the largest ports in the country. In the years 1720-1722 from the epidemic of bubonic plague, according to various estimates, more than half of the 90 thousandth city population died. The continental blockade during the Napoleonic Wars greatly undermined the economy of Marseille. Now it is one of the most multinational cities in France.

Marseille is tiered on the coastal hills. This is a very “mixed" city: chic Mediterranean villas in cypress parks are adjacent to the cheapest hotels in France, and the narrow streets and quiet squares with beautiful facades of XVIII century houses do not combine much with the noisy atmosphere of La Canebière and Cité Radiez.

There are two harbors in the port of Marseille, the old merchant and the new, with 5 pools and huge docks. Here you can see a large raid with 16 lighthouses, protected by the fortified islands of Pomeg and Ratonno and the famous If castle, where boats run from the Kanebiere embankment. A boat trip to the archipelago and to If castle aims to visit the rock island, where the fortifications of the XVI century. complemented by a defensive belt on a rocky base directly at the water's edge. The so-called cameras of Edmond Dantes and Abbot Faria are also shown there.

Above the cosmopolitan Old Port rises the Cathedral of North Dame de la Garde, built in the middle of the XIX century. Her bell tower 46 meters high is crowned with a huge statue of the Virgin Mary. Near the walls of the cathedral there is an observation deck with a magnificent view of the city, port and If castle.

Church of st. Victor is located near Notre Dame de la Garde. The foundation of this ancient church was laid back in the V century. in place of a pagan and early Christian necropolis.

Marseille has many interesting museums: the Museum of Roman Docks, the Museum of the History of Marseille, the Museum of Old Marseille, the Fashion Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the museum of the sculptor Jules Contini, the Grobé Labadier Museum with a collection of old tapestries, furniture, paintings and musical instruments.

While in Marseille, be sure to visit the park and the castle of Faro, which offers a wonderful view of the white city. Visit the excavations of the ancient Greek city behind the building of the Great Exchange of the Second Empire - now it houses the rich Museum of the Navy. In the botanical garden you can see samples of the plant world of the Mediterranean, and in Kalanca, where you can walk or get on a boat, you will see marine coves preserved in pristine purity.

There are many beaches on the 37 km coast. The largest are the beaches of Prado. Next to them is a beach for windsurfers. The beauty of landscapes and picturesque cliffs attract tourists from all over the world.

Returning to the city, try the bouillabaisse, a seafood stew that only really can be cooked in Marseille - you buy fish for it right away from fishermen who praise their goods.скачать dle 11.0фильмы бесплатно
